How Can You Have a Shorter Labor?

Our ancestors lived in a time where women used to labor and birth in 4 hours!  But those are usually not the stories we hear today. 

We have all heard the horror stories of women laboring 30 plus hours.  While being completely exhausted, then have to push their baby out! These women often times have a variety of postpartum issues including problems with breastfeeding. Then there are the many more stories of women laboring 30 plus hours only to end up with a cesarean section. 

Now, don’t get me wrong, some cesareans are necessary and we are fortunate to have this technology and expertise, but is this technology being overused? Are labors longer now because people don’t know the ways of our great - grandmothers?Well, I know and want to share them with you!  Most of my clients that I work with report having a 4.5 - 6 hour labor.  Some, from the start of consistent contractions to the birth of the baby is on average, a total of 6 hours!  For some others, they labor with early labor for 8 or more hours and once active labor begins, they birth within 4.5 to 6 hours!  We are bringing back the 
4.5 - 6 hour labor.

What are these women who are having short labors doing different?  They are receiving my signature, Labor Ready Induction Massage.  Designed from my expertise as a Massage Therapist and 20 years as a Birth Worker, as well as incorporating my skills as an Intuitive Healer.  This is a 90 min session and includes customized body and energy work determined by my intuitive reading. The body has to be in position and sometimes the energy has to be cleared.  Then the body can open efficiently.  Some of these women are also my Doula clients and have had additional lessons that are now available in my Noella Birthing Classes. 

You may discover that your Doctor or Midwife may want to schedule an induction.  Read more about Labor Inductions in my next blog. But here are the most common reasons for inducing labors:

1) Postdates, which is actually AFTER 42 weeks although many Obs have standard practice of inducing between 40-41 weeks

2) Florida Homebirth Law that states women cannot birth at home after 42 weeks    

3) Big Baby - although women who labor spontaneously have a higher incidence of vaginal delivery with a larger baby
  4) Rupture of membranes with no contractions or prolonged rupture of membranes without an imminent birth

This Labor Ready Induction Massage typically results in labor within  2-3 days. Usually, only one session is needed, however some women benefit from a second session and have the same results 2-3 days after their second session.  This technique has also been used on women in active labor where they experienced significantly shorter labors than their peers.   This is a great way to prepare for labor even if you are not being pressured to be induced.
